I will start from the beginning. Our coach, Radu Diaconescu was asked by the GM of CSM Bucuresti to coach the basketball team and had together set out a plan of forming a team with a modest budget in hopes of keeping players at fixed amounts in order to prevent over-spending. I arrived in Romania with 2 other Canadian players on August 7th. Our practices started immediately the next day, we trained for the first month and we all thought that things were going as expected. There were some bumps along the road but when we were starting with a group of players and a coach that had not previously worked together we did not expect to walk into the perfect situation where everyone was on the same page immediately. The practices and games were used as a building experience…so we thought. For the first month things were continually improving and we felt as though we were getting better as team and becoming more accustomed to playing together with each passing game and practice. It is widely known that the goal of the pre-season is to improve ourselves and get us ready for the season games.

As we were on the right track and improving everyday things changed. We were called to a meeting on an off day where we walked into the gym and were told that coach Radu will not be our coach anymore. We were told that "he made the decision for us to move forward and we would be more successful in this manner." It came as a surprise to all of the players that our coach would say something like that. This statement made me look a little deeper into the situation because i had spent a lot of time with coach Radu and knew the kind of person he was and realized that the coach was forced out by the management. This was the only thing that made sense, how can a coach be fired after the pre-season…after working for over a month with all new players and as us players feeling like we were making positive strides towards being a very good basketball team. After the coach was gone, things steadily deteriorated for myself and things were increasingly difficult for the other Canadians as well. The attitudes toward us changed by the management, a new player was brought in at my position without mentioning anything to me, I felt that as soon as our coach was relieved of his duties the Canadians were trying to be pushed out by the management as well. When it came to paying me i was not paid like the other players on the club, all players except for myself and another Canadian (who was injured at the time) were paid as stated by the contract on the 15th of September. It was then that I put the facts together and realized that they were going to release me. I was told in the following days that my services were no longer needed and they were going in a different direction with my position. They continually said that it was nothing that I had done, they just felt like a change was needed. The liked me as a person and a player but just not for this team. I did not understand why they would make such drastic changes when the season had not even started, I was just beginning to feel comfortable and felt like my game was coming together. I was given a return ticket home that was 23 days after they released me, so I was expected to sit around Bucharest while not practicing with the team for 23 days. It was this wait period that caused me to not be able to get another opportunity to play because by the time I would get home all training camps were complete and seasons were starting in most leagues and countries. I attempted to change my ticket to an earlier date but could not change it early enough due to the outrageous pricing due to the ticket the booked me was a special class and i had to pay extra in order to make changes…however i am at home now 5 days earlier but I had to pay quite a bit of money in order to get home because I just could not tolerate being in that situation anymore. In addition to the fact I had to pay a substantial fee, I was forced to take a taxi at 4am to the airport because no one in the management was available to take me to the airport…I found this to be quite un-professional as an organization to make a released player take a taxi at his expense at 4am in a foreign country. In summary, things were going smoothly until coach Radu was fired and the management made it clear that they did not want multiple Canadians on the team, other European players have been brought in to date. I was not paid as according to my contract, I have received no money to date. I was forced to sit out for this half of the season because they could not get me a ticket home any sooner than 23 days. I hope that i will have an opportunity to play again sometime around Christmas. I am extremely frustrated with the situation but i enjoyed my time with my teammates very much, they are great guys and i wish i had the opportunity to play with them instead of being sent home.
